Pre-Season Friendleys

Curshaws 2 v Kidsgrove Carpets 0, Wednesday 13th of August

Curshaws took a 10th minute lead when Tom Watkin dribbled past 3 defenders and slotted the ball past Kidsgove's goalkeeper. Despite a few nervous moments, Curshaws were generally in control of the game and increased the lead 10 minutes from time when Tim Lamb poked the ball home from 10 yards after a goal mouth scramble.

Curshaws 5 v Bentley (Sunday Team) 2, Wednesday 20th of August

With no fewer than 9 players missing, through unavailability and injury, Curshaws recorded an impressive victory against the current Crewe Regional Sunday league Champions. Bentley lead 2-1 at half tim, Lee Hodbrook's header being the Curshaws only reply of the half. Curshaws ran riot in the second half, Mike Thomas equalising with a terrific 20 yard volley. Richard Butler hit an unstoppable left foot shot to give curshaws the lead and turned the provider when he crossed to Danny Huff to side-foot volley home. Richard Butler completed the scoring in the final minute when he rounded the GK and passed the ball into the net, folowing Jordan Coxon's supurb 50 yard cross field pass.

Curshaws 4 v White Lion 0, Wednesday 27th of August

For the final pre-season friendly Curshaws faced yet another
Crewe Regional Sunday League team and took the lead midway through the first half when Lee Holdbrook latched onto Richard Butler's crowss and lashed the ball past the White Lion's Goalkeeper. Craig Ratcliffe netted 2 goals in 5 minutes and was denied his hat trick when his 15 yard shotrattled against the cross bar.

With a comfortable 3-0 half time  lead, 6 substitues were introduced and despite only adding 1 more goal to the tally, an exquisite 20 yard chip by Tim Lamb, 2 minutes from full time, Curshaws ended the pre-season with 3 wins out of 3 to set themselves up for what hopefully will be another succesful season.

This season!

Curshaws FC 7 MMU Cheshire 1

Crewe & District Football League Combined Division

After 3 successive victories, Curshaws were keen to keep the winning run going after the disappointment of last week's game being postponed and took the lead after only 4 minutes, Richard Butler crossing from the left and Mike Thomas moving from the right flank to hit an unstoppable shot from 10 yards. The lead was increased 10 minutes later when Dan Thornton headed home a corner. Just as it seemed that Curshaws were cruising, MMU pulled a goal back in a rare attack. Within a minute the 2 goal cushion was restored when Richard Butler again crossed from the left, to find Dan Thornton who hit a first time shot for his 2nd goal of the game.

Curshaws were now playing some excellent football, orchestrated by Danny Huff, with Simon Foster and Paul Richardson competing well in the centre of midfield. Two further goals came in the last five minutes of the half, firstly Mike Thomas bundled the ball over the line after a scramble, then Dan Thornton completed his first half hat trick following a clever pass from Simon Foster, completing a fine display from a lively Curshaws team.

With a 4 goal advantage, Curshaws played as expected, confidently passing the ball from defence as all of the players were eager to get on the score-sheet, but it wasn't until the half hour mark that the 6th goal arrived, Lloyd Smith powering home a header from a corner. Mike Thomas was unlucky not to get his hat trick when his well struck shot was saved by the overworked MMU goalkeeper. It was left to man of the match Dan Thornton to complete the scoring when he made another surging run from mid-field to latch onto Danny Huff's excellent pass and placed the ball wide of the MMU goal-keeper for Curshaws' 8th hat-trick of the season. It was only in the last 5 minutes of the game that Curshaws relaxed, enabling MMU to test the virtually redundant Joe Grant, but he proved well up to the task, making 2 excellent saves. With Lloyd Smith, Dean Bedson and Nick Thornton all returning, the Curshaws squad is a lot stronger and competition for places is hotting up.

Tarporley Vics Res 1 Curshaws FC 2

Crewe & District Football League Combined Division

Curshaws travelled to play Tarporley Vics Res. who play their home games on the notoriously bumpy and heavy Bunbury pitch, but despite the uneven surface they made a bright start to the game, Danny Huff causing problems down the left side of the pitch. Against the run of play, Tarporley took the lead but the rest of the half was controlled by Curshaws, without creating too many clear chances.

The start of the second half was similar to the first, Curshaws pressing but without threatening the Tarporley goal until half way through the half, Richard Butler having his shot cleared off the line. From the resulting corner, Paul Richardson hit a ferocious 20 yard shot which bounced off the underside of the crossbar and across the goal-line for the Curshaws equaliser.

The hard working Ady Tonks made a magnificent goal-line clearance with ten minutes to go and within a minute, sub Dean Bedson played a superb pass to Danny Huff who, despite the close attention of a Tarporley defender, turned and struck a low shot into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area for what was to be the winning goal. Tarporley forced a series of corners in the final minutes of the game but the Curshaws defence remained strong and resolute, well backed up by the safe hands of Joe Grant who once again had to wait until late in the game to make some fine saves. This was a hard earned victory for Curshaws but was also well deserved.

Man of the match: Paul Richardson

Saturday the 6th of December                                                    Winnington Reserves 3 Curshaws FC 6

Crewe & District Football League Combined Division

Curshaws once again travelled away, hoping to continue their recent run of good form, but they made a disjointed opening and found themselves a goal down after only 15 minutes. Four minutes later, Simon Foster's excellent free kick was glanced home via the head of Jamie Beckett, for his first goal of the season. It wasn't long before he doubled his tally with yet another header following good work by Richard Butler, to give Curshaws the lead for the first time in the game. On the half hour mark, a long kick by goalkeeper Joe Grant was miss-kicked by a Winnington defender, allowing Danny Huff to race through, round the goalkeeper and coolly slot the ball home. The first half scoring was completed when man of the match Danny Huff chipped a free kick over the defensive wall into the path of Richard Butler who provided a low cross for Paul Richardson to score from close range.

As in the first half, Winnington scored first, but the Curshaws reply was instant, Dean Bedson's great pass was collected by Danny Huff and he scored at the near post after taking the ball past a Winnington defender. Huff completed yet another Curshaws hat-trick and scored his second of the season, when the hard working Mike Thomas, who had continually teased the Winnington Full Back, crossed the ball from the right and Huff lashed the ball first time past the Winnington Goalkeeper. Winnington pulled a yet another goal back but aside from Tom Watkin having a couple of good attempts, there were no further goals in the half, despite substitute James Hutchin dictating play from the centre of midfield.

Saturday 27th of December Challenge Cup 2nd Round,

Lostock reserves 2 Curshaws FC 4

Thornton's super show

After the heavy rain of the past week, the Lostock pitch was passed playable after a long inspection by the referee. Despite the soft and heavy surface, Curshaws played some great football, resisting the temptation to play the long ball game, Simon Foster's 20 yard shot flew just past the cross bar in the 15th minute. The main threat to Curshaws was the huge Lostock centre-forward, but he was kept in check by the formidable centre-back partnership of Jordan Coxon and Lloyd Smith. Curshaws dominance paid off in the 35th minute when Mike Thomas turned the Lostock left-back and saw his curling shot parried by the goalkeeper onto the outstretched foot of Dan Thornton, who slid the ball home. Five minutes later, Thornton was scythed down in the penalty area and up strode Tom Watkin which a Curshaws player was harshly given a red card on the stroke of half time.

Now down to ten men, Curshaws were on the defensive, but still played the better football as the pitch started to cut up. The whole team were playing well as a unit, protecting goalkeeper Ali Stubbs well, but he had to pull off a terrific save half-way through the half, tipping a 25 yard shot over the crossbar. The last five minutes of the game produced 3 gaols, firstly Paul Richardson blocked a pass and fed to Dan Thornton who chipped the Lostock goalkeeper from 15 yards, Lostock scored just one minute later, but the two goal cushion was restored when man of the match Dan Thornton passed the ball to brother Nick and he drilled a left foot shot into the bottom corner.

A terrific performance by Curshaws to reach the semi-finals of the Crewe FA Cup, with every player in the squad rising to the occasion, especially when down to ten men against the current Crewe & District League leaders, but a special mention goes to Dan Thornton, who covered every part of the Lostock pitch, scored two goals and making two more in what was a true man of the match performance.

Saturday the 3rd of January 2009

Curshaws FC 2 Winnington Avenue 1, Crewe & District Football League Combined Division

For the first game of 2009, Curshaws were up against one of the in-form teams of the division and were expecting a tough game. This proved to be the case as Avenue took the lead after just two minutes. Curshaws reply was instant with Dan Thornton & Dean Bedson both having shots saved by the Avenue goalkeeper. Tom Watkin rattled the cross bar with a powerful header from Simon Fosters free kick as Curshaws attacked constantly, trying to get the equaliser, but the Avenue rear guard defended well.

For the first twenty minutes of the second half, it was more of the same, Avenue defending stoutly, but the breakthrough came when Dan Thornton was fouled 25 yards from goal. Up stepped man of the match Jordan Coxon to arrow an unstoppable 25 yard free kick into the corner of the net.  Ten minutes later, Curshaws took the lead when Coxon's free kick was fumbled by the Avenue goalkeeper into the path of Dan Thornton who poked the ball home for his seventh goal in his last three games.

Avenue attacked for the last ten minutes of the game but Curshaws did as Avenue had done previously and defended well with strong performances from centre backs Jordon Coxon and Dan Beeston.

Curshaws 4 v Lostock Reserves 3               Curshaws Comeback

Curshaws made an awful start to the game against the league leaders, going 2 goals down within the first 15 minutes. It was nearly 4 but goalkeeper Joe Grant made two outstanding saves, as Curshaws turned in one of their worst performances of the season.

Within five minutes of the restart, Curshaws were 3-0 down after once again pressing the self destruct button. They gained a lifeline five minutes later when Tom Watkin was brought down in the area after a series of surging runs down the left flank.  He got up and despatched a clinical penalty into the corner. Three minutes later, Curshaws pulled another goal back when Mike Thomas's persistence and skill created a chance for himself and he smashed the ball home. Curshaws were now in terrific form, Simon Foster creating from centre midfield and the defence far tighter than in the first half. Ten minutes from the end, Curshaws took the lead for the first time in the game, when man of the match, Mike Thomas scored his first Curshaws hat-trick to give Curshaws the points in a vital match which resulted in Curshaws leapfrogging Lostock to top the table.

Curshaws FC 3 Poynton Kings 3 (Curshaws win 4-3 on penalties after extra time)

Comeback Kings yet again!

Curshaws welcomed Poynton Kings from the East Cheshire league and the game started as a low key affair until Poynton were awarded a penalty and they took the lead, despite goalkeeper Joa Grant almost saving a powerful shot. Curshaws replied well and Tim Lamb was unlucky with a header and a left foot shot, both created by Dean Bedson. The equaliser arrived ten minutes from half time when Richard Butler collected a pass inside his own half, passed a long ball to Dean Bedson, who in turn passed back to Butler who hit an unstoppable left foot shot past the Poynton ‘keeper. Two minutes before the break, Curshaws were dealt a blow when goalkeeper Joe Grant was sent off. From the resulting free-kick Poynton again took the lead. Again Curshaws responded a minute later, Richard Butler hit the post with a low shot.

Despite playing with ten men, Curshaws attacked constantly but were caught on the counter attack with twenty minutes remaining.  The team commitment could not be faulted and ten minutes from the end, substitute Lee Holdbrook played a terrific pass to Richard Butler who turned and shot home a low left foot shot. Within one minute, Butler completed a well deserved hat-trick, again hitting a fine low shot past the Poynton goalkeeper. Despite drawing level, Curshaws were not content with the draw and almost won the game, Jordan Coxon's thirty yard shot jut grazing the cross bar.

Extra time was played but despite Curshaws dominating the play, there was no further score and so the game went to penalties, where Curshaws won 4-3 - the goal-scorers being Lee Holdbrook, Dean Bedson, Jordan Coxon and Chris Shaw, with goalkeeper Craig Ratcliffe being the hero, saving the crucial Poynton penalty.

Curshaws FC 8 Winnington Res 1

Crewe & District Football League Combined Division

Curshaws were unlucky not to take the lead in the fifth minute when Dean Bedson's pass found Richard Butler, but Butler's shot was parried by the Winnington goalkeeper. Winnington took the lead after fifteen minutes and started to test the Curshaws defence. Going a goal down seemed to force Curshaws to step up a gear and Mike Thomas was unlucky with two shots, his skill and trickery creating them both for himself. Five minutes before the break, Curshaws equalised when in-form Richard Butler scored from close range. One minute later, Simon Foster's corner found Dean Bedson, who hit a crisp left foot volley into the net from a narrow angle to give Curshaws the lead for the first time in the game. On the stroke of half time, the Winnington centre forward burst through but goalkeeper Joe Grant made a great one on one save and Ady Tonks saved the rebound with a goal-line clearance.

Substitute Danny Huff was introduced and within the first four minutes of the half Curshaws scored three times. Firstly Mike Thomas showed great skill to create a scoring opportunity and he finished in style with a 20 yard shot. Second was Danny Huff, bursting down the left flank passing to Richard Butler, who in turn squared the ball to Simon Foster, who scored from fifteen yards out with a low shot. Finally Danny Huff curled a low twenty five yard free kick around the Winnington defensive wall.

Curshaws were now in rampant form, everyone wanting the ball and the football was entertaining to watch, with Simon Foster having a great game in mid-field. Chris Shaw tried his luck with a twenty five yard shot that whistled over the cross-bar before Richard Butler scored his tenth goal of the season, when he lashed in a left foot shot, once again set up by Danny Huff. Dan Thornton scored the seventh and also took his tally into double figures for the season with a shot from ten yards following a great pass from Richard Butler. The scoring was completed five minutes from the end when Butler's left wing cross was met by Tim Lamb whose looping header sailed into the top corner of the net. Even though the score-line was a convincing victory, a mention must go to goalkeeper Joe Grant who made some fine saves in the second half to enable Curshaws to improve their goal difference.

Sandbach Town 2 Curshaws FC 3

Crewe & District Football League Combined Division

Curshaws expected a tough game against local rivals Sandbach Town and this proved to be the case in a hard fought derby game. Curshaws started the game brightly, playing some excellent football on the freshly rolled flat surface of Newall Avenue. Sandbach Town took the lead half way through the first half but Curshaws responded well creating chance after chance, but excellent saves by the Town goalkeeper and good defending kept Town in front at the break.

Straight from the restart, Curshaws equalised, Mike Thomas cut the ball back from the goal line and Tim Lamb shot home from close range. Three minutes later they almost took the lead when Richard Butler's excellent pass released Dean Bedson, but his curling right foot shot went just wide of the post. For the next twenty minutes Town created some good opportunities but the Curshaws goalkeeper and centre backs were in excellent form, preventing further goals. The game was now a well matched affair with both teams playing well but it was Curshaws who snatched the crucial second goal just two minutes from time, Richard Butler crossed from the right and Tim Lamb shot, but the Town goalkeeper was unable to gather the ball and Simon Foster blasted the ball into the roof of the net. One minute later it was 3-1 when Richard Butler once again crossed from the right to Lee Holdbrook who's shot hit the post leaving Tim Lamb to capitalise on the rebound from two yards. There was still time for town to pull back another goal but Curshaws held on to record a vital victory.

Curshaws FC 1 Malpas Reserves 0

Crewe & District Football League Combined Division

After last weeks' last gasp win, Curshaws were back on home soil to take on lowly Malpas reserves who, as expected made Curshaws work hard for their victory. Curshaws intentions were clear from the start, going close to taking the lead in the first five minute. Firstly Dean Bedson left two defenders in his wake but shot wide and secondly Tim Lamb robbed the Malpas left back and with the goalkeeper of his line, lobbed the ball just past the far post. Chris Shaw tried his luck from twenty yards, but his well struck shot bounced off the cross bar. Despite dominating possession and playing some great short passing football, Curshaws were let down by some poor crosses and finishing. Just as it seemed that the half would finish goalless, Simon Foster jinked his way past three defenders down the left side, passed to Dean Bedson, took the return pass and hit a twenty five yard dipping shot past the Malpas goalkeeper for a superb goal worthy of winning the game.

Curshaws were indebted to Ady Tonks for a goal-bound clearance at the start of the second half in a rare Malpas attack and for the next twenty minutes Curshaws were unable to capitalise on the fine first half performance, but solid games from centre backs Jamie Beckett and Lloyd Smith snuffed out any danger from Malpas. Curshaws pressed for a second goal, Ady Tonks' cross was headed just over by Jim Hutchin and once again the cross bar thwarted Chris Shaw's curling twenty five yard free kick and the first half Foster goal turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Saturday the 14th of March 2009

Curshaws FC 2 Alsager Town Reserves 0

Crewe FA Cup Semi-Final

Curshaws took advantage of playing with the wind and took the lead after two minutes when an Alsager defender played the ball back to his Goalkeeper, but the Goalkeeper totally mis-kicked, allowing the ball to trickle over the line to give Curshaws a dream start. Curshaws took the game to Alsager, not sitting on the lead, Simon Foster and Richard Butler both testing the Alsager Goalkeeper whilst Joe Grant only had to make one save of note during the half.

As in the first half, Curshaws made a great start, Jamie Beckett burst out of defence only to be fouled on the half way line. Jim Hutchin's searching free kick picked out Danny Huff on the edge of the penalty area, Huff turned the Alsager defender and hit a low drive into the corner of the net. Despite now having the advantage of the wind, Alsager rarely caused alarm in the outstanding Curshaws defence, with Tom Watkin making excellent goal preventing blocks to keep a clean sheet for the home team. If the final ball had been better, Curshaws could have scored more goals but the way the whole team battled, closing down their opponents and displaying great skill, meant that Curshaws chalked up a fine victory against a team that had defeated the cup holders in the previous round. This was an outstanding team performance and ensured Curshaws booked their place, for the first time, in the Crewe FA Saturday Cup final.

Curshaws FC 4 Cuddington 2

Crewe FA Junior Shield Semi-Final

For the second week running, Curshaws were in a semi-final, this time the Crewe FA Junior Shield, and were a goal down after seven minutes. Ten minutes later Curshaws equalised when Dean Bedson outpaced the full back and cut the ball back only for a Cuddington defender to turn the ball into his own net. A minute later, Dan Thornton, who was behind most of Curshaws attacking play, almost lobbed the Cuddington Goalkeeper who had strayed off his line. James Hutchin was also unlucky as his twenty five yard free-kick just missed the upright. The breakthrough came when Ady Tonks' pass found Danny Huff and he confidently dispatched the ball past the Cuddington Goalkeeper to give Curshaws a well deserved half time lead.

Curshaws missed clear cut opportunities to put the game out of Cuddington's reach, before Dean Bedson, not for the first time, outpaced the Cuddington full back, only to be brought down for a clear cut penalty. Craig Ratcliffe stepped up to convert the spot-kick.  Five minutes later, Cuddington pulled a goal back with a well taken free-kick, but instead of panicking, Curshaws, with Dan Thornton in terrific form, went in search of more goals and were rewarded in the last minute when Simon Guest burst through the Cuddington defence before blasting home past the impressive Cuddington Goalkeeper.  A mention must go to stand-in Goalkeeper Ali Stubbs who deputised for regular ‘keeper Joe Grant, putting in an assured performance to help Curshaws reach their second semi-final of the season, although the Curshaws focus must once again turn to the remaining league fixtures.

Curshaws attacked from the first whistle, forcing Cuddington into defending deep into their own half and took the lead after ten minutes. The Cuddington full back cleared the ball off the goal line from a Curshaws corner and Tom Watkin intercepted, hitting a shot which the goalkeeper failed to gather, leaving Dan Thornton to score from a narrow angle. Despite Craig Ratcliffe heading against the crossbar from an excellent Tom Watkin cross and missing several further chances, Curshaws conceded two goals and went in at half time losing what should have been a comfortable half.

For the first twenty five minutes of the second half, Curshaws were a transformed team, equalising after only two minutes when a pass from Simon Foster found Richard Butler, who blasted home from close range. Three minutes later, Lloyd Smith thundered a header against the cross bar but Curshaws were not to be denied. One minute later, a cross by Tim Lamb was bundled home by Dan Thornton who was once again in the right place at the right time. Saturday the 11th of April                                             Curshaws FC 3 Bentley 0

Crewe & District Football League Combined Division

Curshaws were looking to avenge their defeat by Bentley to weeks previous and made the perfect start when good work by Danny Huff set up Richard Butler, who headed the ball over the Bentley Goal keeper. Both Tim Lamb, with a twenty yard screamer and Danny Huff were unlucky not to increase the lead before Bentley missed a couple of excellent openings, the second of which saw Curshaws goalkeeper Joe Grant make a fantastic point blank save to preserve the lead.

The second half was a tense affair for the first twenty five minutes, but Curshaws captain Lloyd Smith, in commanding form and winning every header & tackle, well supported by Jamie Beckett and Simon Guest, snuffed out any danger posed by Bentley. The nerves were settled when a free kick by Chris Shaw was headed back across goal by Craig Ratcliffe to Nick Thornton who volleyed home from seven yards. Ten minutes later the scoring was completed when a great pass by Simon Guest was once again hammered home by Nick Thornton's trusty left foot. Overall, this was a good team performance by Curshaws who knew that they must win to keep them at the top of the league.

Saturday 9th of May 2009              Curshaws FC 1 Sandbach United 1

(Sandbach Utd won 4-3 on pens)

Crewe FA Saturday Cup Final

Curshaws fell behind after only six minutes and made a poor start to the game. With the wind advantage in their favour, Sandbach tested Curshaws goalkeeper Joe Grant with high crosses and free kicks but the Curshaws custodian was in fine form. A bad injury to Simon Guest ten minutes before half time enabled Richard Butler to enter the fray and this change transformed Curshaws. The equaliser came on the stroke of half time when a corner fell to Dan Thornton, who hit a fifteen yard shot that took a slight deflection past the Sandbach goalkeeper.

Now in the ascendency, Curshaws attacked united and almost took the lead when Simon Foster's cross-come-shot hit the cross bar. The woodwork again denied Curshaws half way through the half when Tom Watkin's ferocious twenty yard free kick cannoned off the post, too powerful for the on-rushing Simon Foster to get a telling touch. With James Hutchin and Dan Thornton both turning in excellent performances in central midfield and Ady Tonks keeping the dangerous United winger quiet, Curshaws ended the game far better than they started, though Chris Shaw had to make an excellent saving challenge in the final minute as the United forward sped through on goal.

Another injury to  a key player after only five minutes of extra time, this time Danny Huff, meant that Curshaws had to play the rest of the game with only ten men as all three subs had been used, however they almost snatched the winning goal on two occasions but poor finishing let them down.

The game ended with a penalty shoot-out and with Curshaws missing their first two spot kicks, Sandbach went on to win 4-3.

Despite losing two finals in two weeks, Curshaws have enjoyed a successful season, retaining the Crewe & District Football League title and thanks go to all of the players and sponsors from the Manager.
